How to get A healthy Mind

Health is wealth, and a healthy mind is more important. Being in good mental health can be defined as the state of well—being, in which every individual realizes his own potential. The mind is the set of faculties responsible for mental phenomena (source wikipedia).

In this modern and social media time, One out of every two people suffers from mental health problems. In addition, various family, social, and financial pressures create our mental problems.

What a mental stress-free person can do :

– Can cope with the normal stresses of life.

– Can work productively and fruitfully.

– And is able to make a contribution to the community.

Mental health is stressed in WHO’s definition of health as: “a state of complete physical, mental and social well—being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.

In the past year, only a few hospitals and organizations in Kochi made efforts to create awareness among the common crowd about the significance of mental health. Unfortunately, the educated modern man is not greatly conscious of his mental health.

Early detection required :

Early detection of mental problems can be solved easily. But if it is too late, it becomes too difficult to solve. Because mental health begins from the fetal stage. Regrettably, we notice issues only there is an aberration in the expected behavior appropriate to the particular age.

A child’s deviant behavior and poor scholastic performance are blamed upon the lack of parenting skills. But miss guidance in adolescence is one of the reasons for astray. So, irresponsible adulthood may destroy the family and may be a cause for insecurity in late adulthood.

  • Always feel anxious.
  • Feel sad or down.
  • Feeling scared or anxious for no reason.
  • Not being able to concentrate on work.
  • Feeling frustrated.
  • Shouting without any reason.
  • An extreme change in mood.
  • Avoid friends and family members.
  • Avoid social activity or programs.
  • Loss of appetite, feeling tired, lack of energy, or sleep problems.
  • Suffer paranoia or hallucinations.
  • Unable to face or solve daily problems or stress.

  • Suddenly angry or violent.
  • Attempt Suicidal.
  • Frustration or reluctance towards life.

Reluctance to come forth:

Substance dependence, including alcohol and drugs, depression, OCD and related issues are the most common psychiatric cases reported in Kerala. But only a minority population fixes an appointment with a psychologist.

According to a survey conducted by the Kerala State Mental Health Authority and National Health Mission in 2016, the districts of Idukki, Kasargod, Kollam, Palakkad, and Wayanad.

Nearly nine percent of the population in the state is affected by mental health disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and alcohol-related mental health complications. The analysis reveals that 12.43 percent of the people studied required psychiatric intervention.

Seeking the positive:

Mindfulness is imperative for emotional wellbeing. A person who practices mindfulness Is fully conscious of the present, is aware of her/his thoughts, and is not overly reactive or overwhelmed by the situation at hand.

Some people struggle with understanding what emotions they are experiencing. Frequent negative thoughts after failure, loss, separation, death, accident, financial crisis, etc. need to be addressed professionally.

Dealing with a mentally affected person:

  1. Give immediate professional assistance to the patient.
  2. Provide unconditional support and do not realize the patient about his problem.
  3. Grant relentless encouragement.
  4. Reinforce good choices.
  5. Inspire the patients to think positively.
  6. Take the patient to a beautiful place.
  7. Do not abuse the patient.
  8. Do not neglect.

How to identify mental affliction in children:

  1. Any developmental delays.
  2. Unusual behavior.
  3. Inadequate performance.
  4. Family history.
  5. Cultural or social conflicts.
  6. Talk less.
  7. Not wanting to play sports
  8. Not wanting to hang out with friends or spending time alone at home.

Remedial measures that can be taken:

  1. Medication
  2. Counselling
  3. Psychotherapy
  4. Group therapy
  5. Cognitive behavior therapy and behavior modification.

Statistics according to a survey in 2016 :

  1. Nine percent had depression.
  2. 0.29 percent had schizophrenia.
  3. 1.46 percent had alcohol-related disorders.

From physical problems to mental problems are serious. Mental problems take longer to heal than physical problems. Physical problems can be overcome through medication and exercise. But in addition to medication and exercise, mental and family support is needed to overcome mental problems.

Besides, the patient needs good food and care. If you feel that someone close to you is emotionally disturbed, give him or her enough time. Arrange for him to be taken to a good doctor.

Remember, a healthy body and a healthy mind are the only keys to success and beautiful life.
